Water Security in Senegal
Updated assessment of the state of knowledge on groundwater resource availability and water balance resources/uses at national scale.
- Client
- Banque Mondiale
- Countries
- Senegal
- Year
- 2019–2021
01Context
Senegal must sustainably secure its water resources in the face of increasing pressures.
Updated state of knowledge and a national water balance were necessary for decision-making.
02Key issues
Mobilising and sustainably securing the resource requires precise knowledge of its geometry, productivity and quality.
The challenge was to strengthen decision-making by reducing hydrogeological uncertainties.
03Mission objectives
- Update the state of knowledge on groundwater
- Establish a water balance resources/uses by basin
- Identify critical points (hot spots)
- Define a resource mobilisation strategy
04Services delivered by EAU-GEF
- Assessment of current and future resource availability
- Water balance by basin / aquifer / GWM
- Identification of priority knowledge gaps
- Support for water security strategy
05Approach & methodology
The approach combined desk review, field investigations, geophysics and hydrogeological interpretation to clarify system functioning.
Results were spatialised to objectify decisions and guide facility design.
06Results & added value
The assignment provided the client with a solid and well-substantiated basis for sustainable water resource management and mobilisation.
It demonstrates EAU-GEF's expertise across the full scope of hydrogeological study delivery.
